Competitiveness of primary food production and role in the supply chains

Researchers from LEI Wageningen UR carried out a report for PFP with the title “Primary Food Processing - Cornerstone of plant-based food production and the bio-economy in Europe”. The report describes the supply chains and special characteristics of plant-based primary food processors. Several competitiveness indicators, such as production value, direct employment in the industry were calculated, but also indirect employment in farming.

A number of conclusions can be drawn from this analysis regarding the specific role that primary food processing industries play in the food value chain. The report also looks into the treats these industries are facing which could impact their competitiveness.
